Our Story
The Mount Vernon Educational Foundation, Inc. was created by a small group of community-minded Mount Vernon, NY residents who elected its first Board of Directors and officers in April 2004. This group shared similar views of supporting innovative programs and educators through new sources of direct funding to enrich the educational experience in Mount Vernon public schools.
Fundraising by the Foundation started with $2,100 at its very first meeting in April 2004 and took a significant leap in the fall of that year when it received a generous donation of $50,000 after obtaining its IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Since then, the MVEF has generated tremendous sponsorship resulting in the Foundation celebrating its $1,000,000 fundraising milestone in 2010. As a result, the Mount Vernon Educational Foundation has supported a wide range of activities including sports initiatives, national spelling bee competitions, Model United Nations teams, creating and learning about plant and animal habitats, and enhancing parent involvement in early childhood education and well-being.
